OVERVIEW OF THE SEASON: 2010 - 2011
As the Mens 1s started their first season in the EHL for 19 years the aim was to do what no other team from the Wales & West League had done in the past few seasons and stay in the EHL.
The season started with the tough task of taking on Team Bath Buccs. They had won the league the previous season and missed out on promotion to the Premier Division in the play-offs. Despite losing 4-2, it was clear that we could compete at this level and this was further backed up by the feedback we got from Bath. However, showing potential was not going to keep us up so it was vital to get some points on the board early on.
Consecutive wins against Bournville at home and Fareham away set us on our way. The Fareham victory being particularly sweet as 2 late goals turned a 2-1 loss into a 3-2 victory.
By Christmas we had secured 2 more home wins at Balcatraz, a thumping 7-3 victory over Stourport and a nervy 4-3 win over the University of Birmingham. A rare draw away at Whitchurch left us in 5th spot at Christmas.
We knew the second half of the season would be a challenge as teams would know our strengths and it proved to be just that.
Bourneville away showed some of the Cheltenham of old, a high scoring game that we dominated but ultimately ended in defeat we lost by the odd goal in 9.
Fareham and Guildford came next and it was vital that we took some points to keep us away from the relegation battle and maybe even creep up the table. A tight 2-1 win over Fareham was followed by the performance of the season as we went to Guildford and turned them over 3-2, including knocking out the England Hockey President.
The back to back wins had lifted us to 3rd and all but mathematically secured our EHL status. Despite the season ending in a disappointing run of defeats the teams at the bottom continued to take points off each other and we ended the season in 7th.
An enjoyable cup run also saw us progress through 2 rounds before taking on the 2010 losing cup finalists Hampstead & Westminster. It's fair to say we were taught a lesson by the Prem side as we lost 8-1 but it was a great experience for all the players.
This season has seen the squad and coaching team go through some tough times but our goal was to stay in the EHL and it was a great achievement to succeed in this.
Thanks must go to all the players for their commitment and hard work. To Darren for keeping so many of us going through a long hard season. And to the coaches; Robbo and Gwyn. I wish Robbo all the very best and look forward to having Gwyn at the helm next season.
Finally, thanks must also go to everyone in the club that has helped make our first EHL season possible. Be it by helping get the club house set up, making teas etc. Of these people a special mention goes to Jon Moore for all his work with the admin side of things and for Managing the side from time to time.
