DOUBLE FROM DE SOUZA SECURES TITLE FOR LADIES
27th March 2008
Cheltenham Ladies II 2 Hereford Ladies II 1
CHELTENHAM wrapped up the Severn Division One hockey title with three games left to play. They beat Hereford without their vice-captain Karen Keating, who was called up to the first eleven. Cheltenham took time to settle and went a goal down after 10 minutes.
This was their wake-up call and they came back into the game with a well-taken goal by youngster Therese De Souza, who broke through the defence and scored from a shot across the goal.
The second half was dominated by Cheltenham and they had several short corners which were well struck by Sophie Jowett, but equally well saved by the Hereford keeper.
But they finally scored the winner - De Souza slotting home from a well-drilled short corner move.

CHELTENHAM's men's third eleven finished seventh in the Severn Division after a difficult season.
They were promoted unbeaten last year, but lost the first six games of the season.
After getting off the mark, they reached the half-way point of the season with 12 points.
It was an uphill struggle during the second half of the season, compounded by losing 4-3 to Gloucester after being 3-0 up at half-time.
The final game of the season, against Whitchurch, had to be won to avoid relegation and the team produced their best performance of the season, coasting home 6-0.
The likes of Chris Purnell, Adam Fuller, Robbie Cullimore, Jonny Brayshaw, Chris Sandey, Ben Wright, Bernie Major, James Slee, Ben Gibson and Mike Woodford all performed well.
