Ladies 1s Taunton Vale Pre-Season Tournament Review
12 September 2009
Cheltenham ladies 1st hockey X1 started off the new season with a convincing opening day at the Taunton Vale pre-season tournament, with Emma Jones opening up the scoring as a result of early domination and constructive play in their first match against Redland. Further goals followed in the second half, with Lorna Bowman smashing the ball from the top of the D, and with Chesca and Jones sealing the first victory at 4-1.
The second game against Bath also saw Cheltenham take an early lead with a well worked goal from a patient and indestructable defencive unit up to Sian Evans who baffled the opposing defence with some outstanding stick work. A second goal, late in the first half clinched the game.
On the second day of the tournament, a rather tired Cheltenham team played the hosts Taunton. After some fine solid play, Cheltenham took the lead with a well struck goal from Kim Cook; however Cheltenham were unlucky to concede late in the first half. After an encouraging half time team talk by Captain Gemma Stevens, Cheltenham battled on but were beaten by fresh legs and a disallowed goal making the final score 2-1. A very positive and encouraging start to the new season.
