Mens 2s -vs- Newent

7 November 2009

10 - 4

Cheltenham went into this game on the back of several victories in the league and from those games were showing signs that a flurry of goals could soon be expected from this team.

This is exactly how the match started, with Cheltenham coming out firing and putting 5 goals past the porous defence within the first 15 minutes of the game, and also saw Tim Morris get his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season. Newent, after the shock of Cheltenhams early onslaught were able to get a goal back before half time, to leave them trailing 6-1 at the interval and with their keeper looking crushed and dejected.

After the break Cheltenham continued to attack with considerable quality and added another 2 goals to their tally. Newent made several fruitful attacks and managed to score 3 more goals. But as they strived to search for a way back into the match, Cheltenham continued their dominance by adding another 3 goals, including a third for the Cheltenham right back Rich Whitfield.

This performance from Cheltenham showed why they are the team to beat this season and a sign of things to come.

After the game the team celebrated with a few questionable choices of hats, with Russel Brookes looking like Fred Durst and Michael Woodford appearing to have some little furry animal on his head.

Cheltenham secure their first point of the season with a 2-all draw against Swindon

Cheltenham began the match knowing that it was essential to gain some points from the game, and started with confidence and determination. They made their early possession pay with the reward of a short corner, which was played in to Fiona Maffey which she converted, providing her first goal of the season. This gave Cheltenham a boost of confidence. Swindon continued to battle, trying to find a way through Cheltenham's commanding defensive unit. Swindon converted a well-struck short corner, leaving the score one a piece at half time.

With guidance from the bench, Cheltenham's top ladies team went out fighting for the final 35 minutes. Halfway through the second half Swindon had a rare break and found the back of the Cheltenham goal. The score was equaled through a flowing attacking move that saw captain Gemma Stevens giving a pass that split the Swindon defense, releasing Emma Jones in the D who confidently stuck the ball goal bound, and a deflection from a Swindon defender ensured the ball reached the net. With 5 minutes to go Cheltenham never let their pace drop and worked right to the whistle, ensuring the team start to make their ascent up the table. Fiona Maffey was nominated player of the match as a result of her dominance in defense.

Cheltenham Dispatch Marlborough 6-0

Cheltenham Ladies 2s are back to winning ways after a superb 6-0 win against Marlborough. Settling well, Cheltenham's midfield of Charlotte Ellen, Julie Harding and Karen Keating worked hard to move the ball around, creating great openings for the forwards. The first goal saw Keating make a good run into the circle, resulting in a reverse stick pass to Centamore on the far post who slotted home. Further excellent team play resulted in Sophie Jowett attain a hat-trick before half time, all the goals coming from open play. During the second half Marlborough battled back but the Cheltenham defense held strong with good performances from Holly Hill, Shona Stanely and Alice Shea. Player of the match Jowett scored her fourth, after a brilliant through ball from Keating and Simone Williams took the goal tally to six, with a near post shot from a well worked short corner. A superb team performance!

CHC Ladies 3s Unlucky Result

A disappointing loss this week but the score was no reflection of the ladies 3s performance on the pitch. Although Ross-on-Wye scored three - two were from a couple of lucky breaks and the third from a short corner - Cheltenham put a lot of pressure on their defense, winning a string of short corners, which they were unlucky not to convert. Key striker and captain, Evans, was taken off the pitch with a head injury shortly before the end of the first half. In the second half there were a more attempts at goal from direct play, with Cheltenham switching the ball well across the pitch, and the midfield pressing forward with the ball to the attack. The midfield worked hard to gain and keep possession of the ball and create opportunities to score, and overall the team was unlucky not to score.
