Remembering John Murray Webb

Remembering John Murray Webb

Cheltenham Hockey Club Vice President and one of the club's most gifted players

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Murray Webb, known by many as "Webby", a much-loved member of the CHC community and one of our Vice Presidents.

John passed away peacefully at home on 23rd October 2026, aged 81, following a long illness. He was the much-loved partner of Jenny, father to Lottie and Rupert, and a proud grandfather.

John's association with CHC spanned an incredible 38 years, beginning in 1967. An exceptionally gifted hockey player, he represented both England and Great Britain, captained Cambridge University and earned a reputation as one of the finest players ever to wear a Cheltenham shirt. His talent, skill and natural ability left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to play alongside him.

The esteem in which John was held by his fellow players is perhaps best summed up by one of our Vice Presidents, who shared this tribute:

"I started playing at CHC in 1969, so you can imagine I have seen, and played with, a lot of people. John was the most gifted player I had the honour of playing with/pleasure of watching. A true 'playing' great in the history of CHC."

But John's legacy is about more than his considerable achievements. Like all great club characters, he leaves behind some wonderful stories, many of which have been retold over the years and are still guaranteed to raise a smile.

The famous hat-trick – 1988

Perhaps one of the most memorable tales comes from a match against Exeter University in 1988. The 1st XI found themselves 2–0 down early in the second half when Tony Croucher called upon the 12th man, John Webb (in the days before rolling substitutions).

One teammate recalls the moment:

"The sight of John Webb scoring a hat trick in 1988... the 1st XI were 0-2 down 10 minutes or so into the second half against Exeter University and Tony Croucher summoned the 12th man Webby (no rolling subs then). JW calmly placed his half-smoked cigarette on the side of the pitch and walked on, looking for all the world like a man with asthma who'd just run a marathon – at least that is what the students thought. 10 minutes later Cheltenham were 3-2 up and several Exeter players had been left on their arses whilst the ex-England international had – literally – walked through their defence. Never have I seen a ball hit harder into a net – nor an opposition looked more bewildered."

A story that perhaps says everything about John's extraordinary talent – and his rather unconventional approach to match preparation!

The John Webb Calamity Stick Award

John's name also lives on in one of the club's more unusual traditions. A match report records the presentation of the prestigious John Webb Calamity Stick Award, given to the player making the best pass out of defence to an opposing centre forward, who then goes on to score.

On this particular occasion, the unfortunate recipient was Gwyn Williams, recognised for his outstanding performance in his debut Wednesday XI match!

It is a fitting reminder that, alongside the serious hockey and remarkable achievements, humour and camaraderie have always been at the heart of club life.

A lasting legacy

John will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His contribution to Cheltenham Hockey Club, both on and off the pitch, will never be forgotten. He was very much part of the fabric of this club, and his achievements, stories and legacy will continue to be celebrated by generations of CHC players.

John's son Rupert is hoping to join us at Club Day this Saturday 7th November, when we will be delving into the club archives to uncover more wonderful stories, photographs and memories of his dad. If you have any memories, photographs or memorabilia you would like to share, we would love to hear from you.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Jenny, Lottie, Rupert and all the family at this very sad time.

Funeral arrangements

John's funeral will take place at The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Northleach, Cheltenham, at 2pm on Saturday 14th November 2026.
